Bahati Kitsao, 45, Mombasa widow who was forced to boil stones for lack of food has lost one of his children.
The woman who touched the hearts of many lost her last born daughter named Mary following a short illness after being diagnosed with flu. Her story was aired after she boiled stones to lure her hungry children to sleep hoping the food would be ready.
“I am very sad and cannot talk at the moment, please. My baby was diagnosed with flu and I took her to hospital with her sister. Sadly her condition got worse and she passed on. She was my last born baby,”
said Bahati.
She confirmed that her baby died at Coast General Hospital and had been moved to the facility’s mortuary.
The death was also confirmed by an aid worker from Kenya Red Cross Society only identified as Zuleikha.
“I had visited the family recently and found out the younger child was missing. I was told she had gone to hospital. When they returned home later that day, she looked like she had flu but was doing much better. I sadly found out on Thursday that the young baby had succumbed after a colleague probed of how she was doing,”
Zuleikha said.
Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) had also offered to support Bahati Kitsao undergo psychological therapy to overcome the trauma that had been inflicted on her by an economic burden accelerated by coronavirus pandemic.
During her previous interview, Bahati said the 5-month-old daughter was the one who made her boil stones because she was persistently crying from hunger.
Although deceased, this revelation proves that Mary was the hero who turned around the life of her family.
